Dog Health: Protect Your Pets in the Hot Weather

Dog Health

Dog Health: Keeping your dog cool during the hot months!
by Maria Catherina “Catey” Carlos, Makati Dog and Cat Hospital

The blazing heat of the sun never seems to leave the Philippines. As pet owners, it is our responsibility to make sure that our furry friends enjoy the weather while being able to withstand the summer-like heat throughout the year.

Beat the Heat! Watch Out for These Signs in Your Dogs!

Make sure to take these 5 preventive measures to protect your dog/s during summertime:

  • Always provide plenty of water

Providing an accessible supply of water is the first step to preventing dehydration.

  • Groom Pets properly

Consider cutting your dog’s fur shorter or thinner so they can easily breathe. However, do not shave them, especially double-coated dogs. A dog’s fur acts as an insulating layer to its skin. This is what protects them from sunburn and heatstroke

In order to keep that insulation, make sure to always brush your dog’s fur to prevent any matting or knots.

  • Test the ground temperature with your hand

Before walking or playing with your dog outside, you can roughly check the ground temperature using the back of your hand. Place it on the ground for a few minutes in order to measure the temperature. If you find the ground too hot to touch, then it is too hot for your dog to walk on.

  • Plan outdoor activities accordingly

Rather than taking your dog out on the hottest parts of the day, walk them on cooler times. Temperatures and times may vary depending on the region. Although in general, the hottest times in the day are 12 noon to 3:00 pm. Meanwhile, the cooler times tend to be early morning or evening, such as 6:00 am.

  • Consider cooling products

While not absolutely necessary, cooling accessories and products will provide extra relief to your dogs in the heat. For example, something as simple as dog shoes will protect your fur buddy from the hot roads.

Remember, when it comes to dog health: Prevention is Always Better Than Cure

If You Are Someone Who Is Planning To Get A Pet: READ THIS FIRST!

pet adoption

Are you someone who is planning to get a pet?

Well,  I want to tell you that it entails a lot of responsibility.

Getting a puppy is a risky proposition.

You need to spend a lot on vaccinations and dog food.

You have to train your pet, so they don’t become destructive.

You need to socialize them with other puppies and people, so they become friendly.

All of those take a lot of work!

What if I tell you there’s a way to make it easy for you.

It’s through pet adoption.

There are animal-loving groups that rescue abandoned dogs from the streets.

They spend money on their vaccinations, food, and parasite control.

They even take care of their neutering/spaying.

All of those will cost a lot of money!

They even care for them, so they become friends with people and other dogs.

Where do you come in?

You have to promise to give them a good home.

No need to spend for all of what I mentioned above.

You save tons of money.

You give a fur baby a new home.

You get love in return.

If you are interested in giving a fur baby a forever home, call (Viber) 0908-8967-113 or send us a message in our FB Page Makati Dog And Cat Hospital.

Do You Want To Be A Vet?

I was recently invited to speak during career day in the Catholic Filipino Academy of Brother Bo Sanchez.

The topic was about Veterinary Medicine as a career.

I shared the different areas where Veterinarians can work.

This includes:

  • Private Practice
  • Education
  • Research
  • Public Health
  • Industry
  • Uniformed Services
  • Regulatory Medicine

I also shared that I’m a fourth-generation veterinarian.

My great grandfather, grandfather, father, mother, two sisters, and a half-uncle are veterinarians.

It was fun talking to students and answering their questions.

Of course, I told them what I do in my practice.

It’s to take care of animals, specifically dogs and cats.

To prevent them from getting sick.

If needed, to treat them medically and surgically.

I hope that I was able to share a lot with them.

I wish I were able to make them understand the Veterinary profession.

Maybe I could inspire one or two to become Vets in the future.

By the way, we are hiring Vets right now and you or someone you know might be interested. Send your resume at makatidogandcathospital@gmail.com and fill this out: https://bit.ly/MDCHVetHiring

“Do More OF The CEU Podcast”

Do More OF The CEU Podcast

I was interviewed by the members of the CEU Microbiology Society for their podcast.

They were university students looking for someone with expertise on parasitology topics of pets.

It was a fun interview for me, getting to see their reactions when I told them that – “I’m sure you already swallowed or ingested certain parasites!”.

I was asked to discuss these four parasites:

1) Toxoplasma

2) Tapeworms

3) Roundworms

4) Canine Heartworm

All in all, we were able to record four episodes.

I got this message after the podcasts were posted:

“Good morning, Dr. Carlos!

Do more of the CEU podcast!

I’m one of the committee members of the CEU Microbiology Society and I’ve listened to your “CEU Podcast” with the CEU microsoc on Spotify.

Thank you so much po Doc for enlightening us with your expertise, particularly on the common pet parasites.

I’d say that it was very insightful po since I’m a first-time dog owner.

I just started taking care of Kylo, my pet shih tzu, this January (kaya saktong sakto po yung topic ng podcast po this season hahaha).

Through this podcast po, I became more knowledgeable of the different parasites that I should look out for, including their mode of transmission, symptoms, and ways on how to prevent possible transmission to other pets and humans as well.

Thank you po again Doc for sharing your knowledge with us through this podcast! Stay safe and healthy po!”

 – Krissy Reyes

Wow!

People were actually listening to the podcasts!

It made me feel good that people learned from what I shared.

They would know how to keep their pets healthy by preventing them from getting these parasites.

I had hoped that people would actually get something from these discussions and prevent suffering for their pets.

Keep your pets from getting infected with parasites!

Becoming a pet lover does not stop at having them as companions.

You should also be a responsible pet owner and learn how to keep them healthy.

What Vets Can Learn From Test Kits and Dr. Seuss

Dr Seuss Vet

Test kits are in demand today.

People are learning the importance of doing tests.  After all, test results lead to correct diagnosis and prevention.

I wish pet owners will see it the same way.

When their pet is sick, many pet owners turn to their phones, instead of the Vet.

Many pet owners go online and ask in FB Groups and forums for easy solutions to their pet’s problems.  Can’t blame them with the virus still around us.

Today, many pet owners still refuse to bring their pets to the Vet.  If they do, they refuse requests for lab tests.

They expect the Vet to simply examine their pets, prescribe medicines, and go home.

I feel sad for their pets.

I can’t emphasize this enough.  Laboratory exams are critical for their fur babies to be happy and healthy.

I hope that this growing demand for test kits will also educate more pet parents.  I hope they see the value of having laboratory tests for their pets.

This remains a dilemma for my colleagues in the Vet profession.

It continues to be an uphill battle for us … but we should not give up.

To Vet Students, Fresh Grads, and New Board Passers, I say the same.

You need lab tests to discover the cause of an illness or to detect if there’s any illness there at all.

Like in the case of heartworm disease or intestinal worms. It’s not always obvious, but we do laboratory work to see if those parasites exist in patients.

Please keep in mind what is good for the pets.

Do not give up.

NEVER dispense without laboratory exams or tests.

Enjoy peace of mind,

Dr. Sixto Carlos, DVM, MS, Diplomate PCCP

Simparica Trio: How To Protect Your Dog 100% From The Most Dangerous Worm

The most dangerous worm for dogs is Heartworm.

It is found all over the world.

No place has been spared from it.

Luckily for us,  there are medicines to protect our furbabies from this nasty worm.

What if I tell you not all the medications are equal?

It has recently been found out there are “Super Heartworms” that are resistant to the average preventative.

Luckily for us fur parents there is a relatively new drug that works 100% against the super worms.

This is called Moxidectin.

This drug is the component of two Zoetis products.

Whichever you want to use will protect your fur babies 100%.

The first is Pro-Heart which is given as an injectable which will protect dogs for 12 months.

The second is Simparica Trio which is given orally monthly as a chewable tablet.

Not only does it protect your dog from Heartworms, but it will also keep them from having fleas, ticks and intestinal worms (and possibly some other parasites too).

For your peace of mind from Heartworms (fleas, ticks, intestinal worms and some others too) use Simparica Trio!

Contact us at: 09088967113 to order for your pet’s Simparica Trio

Finally! I will reveal the secret on how to keep your dog free from ticks and fleas for a month just a tablet!

Have you ever had a problem with ticks, fleas and ear mites on your pet dogs?

The Philippines is a tropical country and some parasites just love it here!

Whatever you do,  it seems that you will find them everywhere.

Do  you bring out your furbaby often?

There is a big chance that the environment you visit may have parasites and your loved one may get it there.

Specially in areas where there are more pets, like the vet or groomers.

What to do?

It used to be that you just comb them off.  It doesn’t work.

Maybe you use a shampoo that will remove the vermin. It does work, but only for a few days.

There are sprays that you apply on them.

Sure.

Do you have the time and can you use them properly?

What if I tell you there’s something you can give your pet which will keep all of those ticks, fleas and mites away for a month?

It’s called Simparica.

It is highly palatable and your furbaby will easily take it as a treat.

It will give them a safe and effective protection from ectoparasites for at least 30 days.
