Importance of Dental Care in Pets

Cat Dental Care

Importance of Pet Dental Care:

Oral health doesn’t exactly top the list when it comes to pet care. Of course – dogs and cats don’t need to brush their teeth 3 times a day.

But just like us humans, cats and dogs’ teeth can have plaque buildup which eventually hardens into tartar. This is no less unpleasant for our furry friends.

This can cause Dental Disease, which consequently causes tooth loss. Not only very painful, but removes one of the very basic functions – to be able to eat.

It’s also important to carefully watch your cats and/or dogs. They’re very good at hiding their pain in the early stages of this disease

Most dogs and cats have some sort of oral disease by the time they’re three years old.

If you have a puppy or a kitten, make sure to start a tooth-brushing routine by the time they’re 6-9 months old.

Meanwhile, if you have a pet that doesn’t have a brushing routine, make sure to get them checked by a vet before taking any other actions. Depending on the severity, you might need your pet to be professionally cleaned.

Do You Know The Hardest Part Of Your Fur Baby’s Body?

What is the toughest part of your fur baby’s body? Do you have an idea?

Can you guess?

Is it bone?

Nope! While it comes in a close second,  it isn’t.

It’s the teeth!

Enamel makes up the teeth which are the strongest part of the body.

Fur babies need their teeth to be strong, so they won’t have problems when they eat.

While teeth are sturdy and can take a lot of punishment, you still need to look after them.

Brushing daily is one way to keep them healthy.

It keeps teeth clean by removing food that may cause tartar buildup.

Choose food that helps to keep your fur baby’s teeth clean.

Certain types of food and treats will keep pet’s teeth healthy.

It would be best to have occasional dental scaling.

Your veterinarian will recommend how often your pet needs this.

Dental scaling is a procedure that requires general anesthesia.

This means a veterinarian will put your pet to sleep.

This planned procedure requires a battery of tests to ensure your fur baby is healthy enough to undergo the process.

Dental scaling and brushing prevent dental plaque.

Dental plaque is a substance from food particles and saliva that mix in your mouth.

It will build up in your mouth if not removed, which may lead to gum disease and tooth decay.

If the plaque isn’t removed, this will lead to tartar buildup, leading to other problems.

Tartar may also cause something we all hate, bad breath!

While you may be tempted to remove the tartar, this isn’t recommended as you may damage your pet’s teeth.

Experts should do this.

Common Disease in Cats: Chlamydiasis

Chlamydiasis

Chlamydiasis – what is this?

This is one of the most common causes of conjunctivitis in cats.

Chlamydiasis in cats is caused by a bacteria (Chlamydia felis).

It normally affects the eyes, nose and throat.  May also involve the lungs if left untreated and also has possible joint and genital tract involvement.

The third eyelid may protrude.  The eyes develop watery discharge.  It eventually becomes thicker and becomes yellowish or greenish.

Chlamydia infection is spread by close contact.  It is recommended that if one cat in a home is diagnosed, the others must also be treated.

Most ages of cats may be affected, but kittens and young cats are mostly at risk.

Treatment for Chlamydiasis

Chlamydiasis can be treated with antibiotics.

You can ask your cat’s vet about this the next time you bring your cat in for a vaccine shot or check up.

If you are a responsible pet parent you will go to an expert veterinarian.

Happy Client: Jesy Griffin

makati dog and cat hospital review

The vet was very thorough and professional.

I was looking for a place in Metro Manila that could do dental extraction using gas anesthesia at a very short notice and they efficiently responded and accommodated my request.

Thank you so much! Big thanks to Ms. Myles as well for making things so easy for me!

TOOTHPASTE for PETS? No PROMBLEM.

With all the different toothpaste brands out in the market, my patients often ask me which one I would recommend the most.  And my reply is always the same: the one that you LIKE the most.   Of course there are “specialty” toothpaste out there that cater to specific needs (like tooth sensitivity, whitening and fluoride allergy) where this response doesn’t apply, but with regards to toothpaste for everyday use it just simply doesn’t matter.  What does matter though is how you brush your teeth: how long, how often, how hard, and what kind of strokes you use.  The reason for this all boils down to what actually causes tooth decay and gum disease in the first place: dental plaque.  Dental plaque is that soft yellowish film that forms on the tooth surface after it is exposed to food particles.  This film is produced by bacteria in the mouth that adhere to the tooth surface. When not effectively controlled, these bacteria consume sugars in the mouth, and as by-product produce acidic materials that destroy tooth structure, as well as the gums and their supporting structures.  The way therefore in eliminating the risk of tooth decay and gum disease is to remove plaque and food debris in the mouth, and this is achieved by proper tooth brushing. When done properly, the bristles of the brush mechanically sweep away the plaque from the tooth surface, thereby eliminating the primary cause of tooth decay and gum disease.  This is made even more effective when flossing is done by the patient, to remove food debris from the area of the teeth that can’t be reached by tooth brushing.

This is not to say that toothpaste do not help in the fight against tooth decay and gum disease.  toothpaste contain fluoride that helps strengthen the teeth and fight off bacteria.  Some may even contain calcium which are supposed to help strengthen teeth and bone (the effectiveness of which is debatable since calcium exchange happens between blood and bone and not with erupted teeth).  However these benefits are only secondary to the mechanical removal of plaque by brushing and flossing, since the application of toothpaste alone cannot effectively eliminate plaque production in the mouth.  As a result, toothpaste application becomes only supplementary to tooth brushing in maintaining good oral health.  So going back to the original question on which toothpaste is the best: it’s the one that (for you) tastes the best, smells the best, and makes you want to brush your teeth longer, and more often. No toothpaste? No problem!
