Prevention is Better Than Cure for Dog Vaccine: Why Do We Vaccinate Our Dogs For Rabies?

Pet Vaccine

Prevention is Better Than Cure: Why Do We Vaccinate our Dogs for Rabies?
by Maria Catherina “Catey” Carlos, Makati Dog and Cat Hospital

An important Dog Vaccine is the Anti-Rabies Vaccine.

Just as how we humans vaccinate for flu yearly, dogs must vaccinate for rabies every 1-3 years.

As a pet owner, you’ve probably heard the word “rabies” several times, either when talking to fellow pet owners, or to vets. Most of you would know that this disease is in fact, very dangerous. You might also know that this disease is transmitted through an animal bite.

However, there is a lot more to rabies than one might think. What many might not know is that rabies is categorized as a “fatal” disease.

Learn About Rabies

  • How does rabies work?

Once bitten, the rabies virus travels through the nerves, then to the spinal cord. Through the spinal cord, it reaches the brain. In the brain, it multiplies and then infects the nerve cells. This eventually leads to death.

Additionally, rabies is not only transferred through an animal bite. The rabies virus is contained in the saliva of the affected animal. If that saliva happens to land on broken skin, or mucous membranes (which are found on your nose and mouth!), then one can get infected.

What are the vaccines that your dog needs? Check the Dog Vaccination Schedule.

  • Preventable, but not treatable

Another reason why rabies is so devastating is because there is currently no treatment. It has a 99% mortality rate. Once the symptoms show up, it’s over. What makes it worse is that rabies symptoms can take weeks, or even months to show up.

However, there is light at the end of the tunnel. Rabies is one of the most easily preventable diseases.  The rabies vaccine is highly effective, which makes the virus have a 100% prevention rate. It’s even possible to fully eliminate rabies. In fact, the U.S. state of Hawaii is successful in doing this

If you, a responsible pet owner do the proper medical care which is:

  • Vaccinate cat or dog every 1-3 years
  • If bitten, get vaccinated for rabies immediately

Then it is likely that you or your pet will not get infected with the virus

By vaccinating your pets from rabies, you are not only saving your own life, but you are also saving the lives of many other people, animals, and of course, your pet.

Dog Dehydration: Beat the Heat! Watch Out for These Signs in Your Dogs!

Dog Dehydration

Beat the Heat! Watch Out for These Signs in Your Dogs!
by Maria Catherina “Catey” Carlos, Makati Dog and Cat Hospital

A short guide on how to protect your pets from the Philippine Heat

Despite summer ending, the Philippine heat still prevails. As a country with “hot and hotter weather,” this scorching season never seems to leave. As pet owners, we should stay aware and watch out for our furry friends.

Our dogs can’t regulate their heat as efficiently as humans, making them more vulnerable to conditions such as hyperthermia. Also known as “heat exhaustion,” hyperthermia occurs when your dog’s temperature goes above what is normal. This leads to them being unable to regulate their body temperature, and can eventually become a fatal heat stroke.

In order to prevent your dogs from catching this, make sure to watch out for these signs:

  • Difficulty in breathing

When your dog has difficulty in breathing, it is likely that it’s hyperventilating. This is caused by them being overheated.

Don’t Lose Your Pet This Summer: Avail of Pet Microchipping!

  • Dehydration

Dehydration occurs when your dog does not have enough fluids/water. It can appear in many forms. Here are a few of the main ones:

  1. Excessive/Heavy panting
  2. Dry nose
  3. Lack of Urine
  • Lethargic behavior & Poor responsiveness

The combination of several factors such as increased body temperature and dehydration can cause your dog to be more tired than usual (ex: napping more than normal).

  • Muscle tremors

Muscle tremors such as shivering, shaking or twitching happen when hot temperatures induce a stress response in dogs. Part of this response is producing hormones which can affect muscle coordination.

  • Has trouble walking

If your dog has trouble walking, that could be a sign of dizziness. Overheating may have caused your pet to become light-headed.

If you notice these signs, make sure to contact your local veterinarian immediately.

Dog NeuterPet Neuter: Every Pet Owners Should Consider This

Taking care of pets takes a lot of responsibility.

You should be sure they are healthy and happy.

You should also be sure not to add to the number of stray pets.

Protect Your Furry Friends: Why Microchipping is a Must for Every Dog and Cat Owner!

Pet MicrochipPet Microchipping: One of the most important things you must do is protect your furry friends!

As responsible pet parents, we want to do everything for our fur babies.

One of these is having our loved ones microchipped.

What for?

Is this even a necessary thing to do?

Know the Hidden Dangers of Ticks and Fleas

Wouldn’t microchipping be an extra expense and hassle for us?

While it may cost a bit extra, you have to think about many things.

You have to consider the benefits it gives you:

1) Pet identification in case they get lost for whatsoever reason.

2) Deters theft because your pet can be easily identified if ownership is contested.

3) Easy medical information retrieval.

4) Microchipping gives pet owners peace of mind, especially for pets that tend to wander around.

5) Many places require microchipping pets for easy identification.

All of the above are reasons for having your pets microchipped.

It is an easy process but, admittedly, a slightly uncomfortable procedure.

Something that your fur baby can easily tolerate.

It’s just like getting a shot of medicine.

Besides, it is just a one-time thing that will keep your pet protected for a long while and you, as a pet owner, be at peace.

So what are you waiting for?

Dog Adoption: Will You Be My Fur Mommy?

pet adoptionDog Adoption: Will You Be My Fur Mommy?

Thoughts From A Dog Living In A Rescue Shelter

Dear Future Fur Mommy,

I’m writing to you from our rescue shelter tonight.

From the corner, I can see Bruno, an Aspin just a year older, sleeping in a cage he is sharing with 3 others.

Our rescue shelter is full.

Every space is taken.

I don’t always know how we make room for all these dogs, but by the grace of God, tonight we found a way again.

Bruno came to us tonight, exhausted, his eyelids barely able to stay open.

He’d been trying to sleep near the subdivision gate, in the tricycle station, near the school.

He’d rested his head on a neighborhood sari-sari store where 3 men are drowning their sadness in Red Horse.  Finishing the last kropek pulutan, they were eyeing Bruno in a queer way.

One sneaks behind Bruno while another rushes to hold his paws and punch him in the head.  Bruno’s loud yelps and cries woke up a neighbor who begged the drunkards to let the poor dog go.

It was the kind-hearted neighbor who fed Bruno and brought him to our shelter.

We made space for him in the kennel, offered him some food, and licked the bruises he had on his paws.

Bruno is now asleep, too tired and traumatized from the experience.

Bruno is safe tonight because of people like you who care about rescue dogs.

For the rest of us who have been living in the shelter for quite some time, we have not lost hope.

I for one know for sure, that somewhere out there is my Fur Mommy and she is looking for me.

As long as there are people like you, I know that I will find my forever home who will treat me like family.

For now, I will be here waiting for that day when you come and take me home.

I hope it will be soon …

Waiting for you,

Snowy

Hidden Dangers: Ticks and Fleas

Ticks and FleasHidden Dangers:  Ticks and Fleas

If you’ve ever had a dog or cat,  chances are you’ve seen ticks and fleas.

The two are common in the Philippines and cause many problems.

Both are transmitted by exposure to the environment.

Ticks are found in places where it’s hot and humid.

Fleas are more common in relatively cooler areas.

Ticks and fleas can be a real pain for our furry friends and even for us humans!

Some species of ticks spread Lyme disease, a condition that causes neurological problems in people.

Some even cause paralysis!

Scary!

Luckily,  those ticks are not present in the Philippines.

But the ticks here still pass on many diseases to dogs and cats.

Flea bites are irritating and may cause allergies to our pets and humans!

Fleas can transfer tapeworms if swallowed by accident.

Yuck!

It used to be that treatment and prevention of ticks and fleas on pets were difficult.

There was a time that it required the manual removal of ticks and fleas!

It was a long and tedious process!

And the meds could have been more safe and effective.

Nowadays, there are several ways to treat and prevent infestation from those parasites.

You can choose from spot-ons, collars, sprays, or tablets!

Each work in a different way; it all depends on your needs.

Send us a message on our Facebook or Instagram.

What People Do To Save Money To Have Pets

Save Money Pet Adoption

So, you finally decided to become a fur parent!

I want to tell you that it entails A LOT of responsibility.

Getting a puppy is a risky proposition.

  • You need to spend a lot on vaccinations and dog food.
  • You have to train your pet, so they don’t become destructive.
  • It would help if you socialized them with other puppies and people, so they become friendly.

All of that takes a lot of work!

What if I tell you there’s a way to make it easy for you.

It’s through PET ADOPTION.

There are animal-loving groups that rescue abandoned dogs from the streets.

They spend money on their vaccinations, food, and parasite control.

They even take care of their neutering/spaying.

All of those will cost a lot of money!

They even care for them, so they become friends with people and other dogs.

Where do you come in?

You have to promise to give them a good home.

It would help if you could give them a comfortable life.

Of course, you have to love them!

No need to spend for all of what I mentioned above.

You save tons of money.

You give a fur baby a new home.

You get lots of love in return.
