Typhoon Survival for Your Pets

Typhoon season is here and everyone is preparing for these storms as they come.

People nowadays are more vigilant in preparing, more so for super typhoons like Ompong.

Have you included the safety of your pets in your preparation?

Instead of talking about pet grooming as I promised in my last post, I decided to write this to share some tips on typhoon survival for your pets.

Typhoon Survival for Your Pets

Chuvaness.com, one of our local food bloggers had a timeless article on this topic. Her post is based on the tips of the World Animal Protection:

Here’s the most important excerpt from her blog:

What to prepare for your pets:

  1. Food. Store at least three days of non-perishable pet food (canned or dried) in an airtight, waterproof container (remember the can opener!). Ideally this should be the same food as your normally feed your pet so as to avoid stomach upsets.
  1. Water. Store at least three days of water for your pet, in addition to the water you need for your family (remember an animal can drink more water than usual when under stress). Plus you will need extra water to clean up after your pet.
  1. Medicines. Store any extra supply of medicines your pet needs in a waterproof container, as well as any special dietary needs or supplements.
  1. Veterinary/Medical Records. Store copies of any medical and vaccination records in a watertight container or ziplock bag including your vet’s name and telephone number (in case you have to shelter your pet or place them in foster care).
  1. First Aid Kit. Prepare a first aid kit. Talk to your vet about any specific requirements such as tick/flea prevention, antibiotic ointment and saline solution (i.e. eye wash solution separate from your family use)

3 Important Pet Boarding Questions You Ask (Before Boarding Your Pet)

3 Important Pet Boarding Questions You Ask (Before Boarding Your Pet)

Before boarding your pet, here are 3 important pet boarding questions you need to ask.

Today, there are several options on pet boarding facilities as the need for them arose in the recent years. Pet owners are given the convenience of leaving their pets in a safe place while they travel. This means that they can enjoy their trip, be it for business or for leisure without worrying about their furry kids.

But like anything in life, deciding on the right pet boarding facility can be confusing.

So here are 3 important pet boarding questions you ask to make sure that you choose the best one for your pet: (link)

Where will your pet stay?

When boarding your pet, you have to check the condition of the area. Ask the in-charge to allow you to see the place where your pet will stay. This way you will be assured that your pet will have a comfortable place while you are away.

Other than the spot for your dog, also observe the surroundings. A good quality pet boarding facility should have overall cleanliness.

If you feel that the pet boarding facility is lacking or does not suit you, it is okay to find another one.

Will your dog have exercise?

Activity is important for most dogs. That is why you should ask the pet boarding facility of important details. This includes exercise schedule of the pet boarders. You can also ask for the frequency of the exercise.

Know also what other activities available for your pets. Such as interaction with other dogs or pets within the facility if allowed. These activities will keep your pets healthy and avoid getting bored.

What are the basic requirements?

Find out the requirements prior to boarding as well the must bring pet stuff on the day of boarding.

The basics should include your dog food, favorite toy and medical history. It is important that your pet is also updated on vaccinations to ensure a healthy environment for every pet.

Ask for the rates as well and other inclusions to know the total fee for using the pet boarding facility. You may include other services such as grooming, dental services and others while your pet is already there.

Think about it as your pet’s own vacation while you go on your travel adventures.

So if you plan to leave your pet this summer, find a pet boarding facility near you. Learn as much as you can of these facilities. And do not forget to ask the pet boarding questions to the staff or in-charge.

You Found a Great Pet Boarding Facility. Now What?

You Found a Great Pet Boarding Facility. Now What?

Make a reservation well in advance. If you wait too long, the facility may become fully booked. Especially with the holiday season.

When you bring your dog in for boarding, remember her food, special instructions, and any other permitted items.

Do not bring items that you absolutely need to get back, as they could become lost or damaged. Bear in mind that many facilities limit personal items for this reason.

Make sure the boarding facility has contact numbers for you on your trip, plus local emergency contacts in case you cannot be reached.

Relax. You’ve done your research and your dog is in good hands. Enjoy your vacation!

Questions You Should Ask When Boarding Your Pets

Are You Ready For Pet Boarding?

Questions You Should Ask When Boarding Your Pets

Here are some questions to ask when boarding your pets:

Where will your pet stay?
You should know where your pet will stay while at the boarding facility. Ask to have a tour of the facility to make sure that the facility is organized, neat and odor-free.

How often will your pet be walked or exercised?
Boarding facilities usually let the dogs out twice a day and for a few minutes only. This may not be a problem if your pet is used to this routine. But if you want your pet to get more exercise, find a boarding facility that allows more exercise time - 3 walking times daily or more. Also learn if there is a fenced-in area where your pet can have room to roam a bit.

What will your pet eat?
Boarding your pet can be stressful, even for those who have been boarded a few times. The best way to avoid stressing your pet while on board is to bring his food. Check if there is additional charge to feed a special diet. Make sure to stress on the importance of giving your pet his regular food.

Will your pet be allowed to interact with other pets?
Ask the boarding facility about their rules regarding dog playtime. This includes their policies if an injury occurs.

What will happen if your pet will get sick or injured?
Boarding facilities should monitor the daily habits of their pet boarders. Some pet boarding facilities will do a daily “once-over” on their pet boarders to ensure there have been no tell-tale changes in their physical condition. This usually holds true for a boarding facility that is part of a veterinary hospital. Inquire if it is possible to bring your pet to your own vet if he needs medical attention.

How much is pet boarding going to cost?
When you plan on your vacation, make sure to include a budget for your pet’s boarding. Be direct with the pet boarding facility up-front. Inquire on the base boarding fee per day. This is typically based on the size and breed of dog you have.

How Do You Choose A Pet Boarding Facility?

How Do You Choose A Pet Boarding Facility?

Get Solid Recommendations

Ask friends, family and even pet expert for their suggestions. Ask them about their experience on pet boarding.

Do Your Own Research

When you have come up with a list of recommended pet boarding facilities, research each one. Read the online reviews.

Take Time To Visit Each Pet Boarding Facility

It is important not skip this step. Have enough time to tour the kennel and also ask questions. Find out about schedules, exercise times, meals and vaccination requirements. Ask for a price list.

For Long Trips, Allow A Trial Run

If you are planning for a long trip, try boarding your pet for just one night - do this well way ahead of your departure date. This trial run will let you know how your pet reacts to the experience.
